How to Tell if You Have a Dental Emergency

There are a couple of guidelines to help you determine if you need urgent dental care. Typically, if you are not in pain, bleeding from the mouth or have swelling, you can probably wait for a normal dental appointment.

Below are some questions to help you determine if you have a true dental emergency. If you answer Yes to any, you should contact an emergency dental office immediately and get their professional opinion:

  • Are you suffering from severe pain?
  • Did the incident result in any loose teeth?
  • Do you have bleeding from the mouth?
  • Were you hit in the face or mouth?
  • Is there any swelling in the mouth or facial area?
  • Are you experiencing any bulges, swelling or knots on your gums?
If you have any of these symptoms, call us immediately at 8433-756-CARE (2273).

Emergency Root Canal

An abscess is an infection that occurs in the tooth and gums and can spread rapidly to other locations in the body. This type of infection requires immediate attention and you should contact your dentist without delay.

An emergency root canal may be able to be performed by your dentist. If not, you may be referred to an endodontist to allow the abscess to drain before the root canal is performed.

Call Carolina Dental Care to request a same-day emergency dental appointment. Our staff can see you the same day to diagnose and begin treating your tooth abscess before it can spread.

If you are visiting or live in Tabor City, NC and do not know where to go for a dental emergency, look no further than Carolina Dental Care. Our dental emergency clinic can handle all your dental emergency needs.

Chipped, Broken or Fractured Tooth

If you have fallen and chipped a tooth, if it doesn’t hurt, you can probably wait a few days to see a dentist. However, a cracked or fractured tooth could be serious and require emergency dental treatment.

The difference between the two is a chipped tooth is more cosmetic where a fractured tooth may have damage to the inside of the tooth. When this occurs, it is important to contact your dentist immediately for an emergency dental appointment so you can try to save the tooth.

After the incident and before your emergency appointment, rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water to clean the area.

If you still possess the chipped pieces, clean them and bring them to your appointment, so our Carolina Dental Care team can attempt to repair your chipped tooth with the natural pieces.  Call for 843-756-2273 for Dental Emergency or visit our main website.

Temporary Crown Is Missing

When a temporary dental crown is placed on the tooth, since it is more delicate than the final crown, there is a risk that it can become loose or even fall out.

If you feel your temporary crown has come loose or comes out, be careful not to swallow it when rinsing your mouth with warm salt water, clearing the area of any debris. However, don’t panic as having a loose temporary crown, or even one that has come off is not a dental emergency.

You can put the crown back in place by using Vaseline, toothpaste, or a very small amount of denture adhesive into the temporary crown and place it back onto your tooth until you can see your dentist. You should try to schedule an appointment within a few days after it has come loose to have the crown properly re-cemented.

At Carolina Dental Care, we will work with you to make sure we get you into the dentist as soon as possible as we understand how uncomfortable and worrying it can be to have a loose crown.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Kids aren’t the only ones who lose teeth. In the event you knock out a permanent tooth, be sure to call Carolina Dental Care for an emergency dental appointment.

A knocked-out tooth requires urgent attention. If correct steps are taken immediately after the tooth has been knocked out, it is possible the tooth can be reinserted and preserved.

Before your appointment, there are important first-aid practices that can help save your tooth:

  • Do not touch the root. You should only handle your tooth by the crown
  • Carefully clean your tooth of any dirt and debris but do not attempt to clean the tooth with any sort of cleaning       solution
  • If possible, place the tooth back in the socket, holding it gently in place as you try to bite down
  • If you cannot insert back into the socket, keep your tooth in a cup of milk
  • Call an emergency dentist immediately! The sooner you can see the dentist to reimplant your tooth, the better chances you have of saving it
